However, if you're like me and a spa trip is not in your near future a homemade version of this scrub is simple and made from fairly basic ingredients you may already have on hand...

Ingredients:

Grapeseed Oil

Honey

Raw Brown Sugar

Bulk Grapeseeds (count this as an uncommon kitchen item!)

Mix together, step into the shower, scrub scrub scrub, rinse with warm water and follow with a very indulgent moisturizer. Follow with a nice hot cup of herbal tea or perhaps a glass of red wine à la Caudalie!

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to live inside of one of those lincoln log homes you may have built as a child? I never did either, log homes are not my thing (much to the dismay of my environmental scientist husband!) But if the interior of a lincoln log style home could look like this would you reconsider? I sure would!

In love with the fireplace and the chandelier in the living room. Overall, it's stunning. And because the wood is painted white (my favorite!) it's sleek and chic. No Brawny men here ☺

White Vintage Findings

A few vintage finds (the first with a bit of a story) mostly in white with a touch of gold...

This juice glass and server set is reminicent of one my grandmother had. She was without the server but her glasses were identical in shape and size with a bit of variation in floral pattern and color (her flowers were yellow). Recently, my parents and I were remembering Grandma's glasses and much to my surprise my mother had located this set and gifted it to me a few weeks ago. I can hardly wait to host a brunch!

As Promised: The Painting

A peek at our new painting that I referenced here. We are still trying to compromise on where this lovely should be displayed in our house...only time will tell. For now, it is propped against the wall in our living room. The antique dealer is convinced we should paint the frame; his suggestions were matte black or a bright red. I love the detail of the frame and agree it could use some color tweaking, but am hesitant to do anything to distract from the beauty of the painting.

So, what do you think? Paint the frame? And if so, what color?

Wishlist: Artwork Inspiration

My husband often says "It looks like we just moved in. We need to hang some things on the walls." Oh how I love thee ♥ And while I somewhat agree that we could add more interest to our walls, I don't agree that we should just hang things up for the sake of it. I ~~heart~~ visual clutter.

This Friday, I am tagging along with my husband to an out of state business meeting and I just so happened to purchase a French Impressionist painting that we are picking up on our way! I discovered the painting last weekend while antiquing and could not stop thinking about it. When I learned my husband had this upcoming trip only 45 minutes from the antique market, I called and purchased the painting over the phone...who does this?! I know, I know and trust me I have never purchased artwork over the phone before and my husband and friends (S.C. particularly) have been laughing at me ever since. If anyone will share a love for this painting as much as I do, I know it will be you my readers and my fellow blogger friends. Fashion Story

Have not had much time for shopping lately, so I am virtually shopping and creating collages of outfits I would love to own, right down to the accessories. The catch is I own the jewelry, well, technically I made the jewelry but it's up for grabs through my Etsy shop and not for me to keep. I know many of you have your own shops/businesses and will agree with me when I tell you that it's hard to part with these treasures we love so much but we know in our hearts that there are others who will love them just as much, if not more, than we do.

Let us head into fashion dreamland for a quick trip and imagine ourselves strolling down the streets of oh let's say...Paris, Milan, New York City, or maybe even your hometown because we owe it to ourselves to look magnifique!

White Rooster

My mother has been trying to giveaway this old rooster lamp for years:

It's a little bit country in style- okay super country- for my liking (or my mom's hence the donation to me),and since I don't do country or folksy decor, I racked my brain to devise a plan to repurpose this little creature...

So, I disassembled the lamp (he's kind of cute by himself):

And dug out my glossy white spray paint to create a versatile, slightly more modern piece:

Comfort Food: Homemade Macaroni and Cheese

I'm not one to crave mac and cheese but lately the weather has been damp and rainy and I am craving some comfort food. Today I recalled a homemade mac and cheese recipe I tried a few years ago that was so delicious! It's from Discovery Channel's Get Fresh with Sara Snow and is made with organic dairy products. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH what a difference this makes in the flavor of this classic dish. The creaminess and purity of the taste was surprising and I was amazed that it improved the taste that significantly. It seems like a minor detail, but trust me when I say it makes a huge difference! Don't worry Mom (and Grandma up above) I still love your recipe, but even our old standby's can use a shake up every once in a while.

Snow Family Mac and Cheese

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups elbow macaroni
3 T organic butter
3 T flour
2 C organic milk
1/2 t salt
dash pepper
2 C grated organic cheddar cheese
2-4 organic roma tomatoes—sliced
1 C bread crumbs

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Cook pasta until firm. Melt butter. Blend in flour. Wisk in milk.Cook at medium until thick.Add salt and pepper and 1 1/2 cups cheese.Stir to melt.Place cooked macaroni in greased baking dish.Pour sauce in. Top with sliced tomatoes. Sprinkle with cheese and bread crumbs.Bake for about 35-40 minutes. Start with the lid on and then take it off for about the last about 20 minutes, so the top gets nice and toasty.

Serve with mixed greens or salad.

Sorry I don't have a picture to share with you, but please put the tomatoes on top! So tasty...

Welcome to Downton Abbey!

Just coming down from the high of my new favorite series, Downton Abbey, which airs on PBS Sunday nights at 9pm EST. Have you seen it? If not, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! In my opinion, it's the most addictive Masterpiece series since Upstairs Downstairs which I remember watching as a little girl with my family over a bowl of chocolate ice cream, slowly drifting off as the calming British series lulled me to sleep. It is not just me who adores this series...it's so popular that articles have been written about how to host a Downton Abbey style cocktail party and dinner, as well as jewelry and home decor in the style for sale on the PBS website.

By now you're probably wondering what all the excitement is about. Rather than try to sum up the series in my own words, I enlisted the help of the PBS website and found a brief synopsis to share with you:

It's 1912, and life in the Edwardian country house of Downton Abbey is idyllic and bustling for the Crawley family, aided by their cadre of servants. Robert, Earl of Grantham, his American heiress wife Cora, and their three daughters, along with Robert's mother Violet, have lived largely uncomplicated lives. But the sinking of the Titanic hits home in an unexpected and dramatic way — Lord Grantham's heir, James Crawley, and his son Patrick have perished. It's personally agonizing (momentarily) for daughter Mary who was supposed to marry Patrick. On a grander scale, suddenly all the predictable succession plans have gone terribly awry, and unheard of questions now loom large — Who will be the new heir to the earldom? And what will happen to this distinguished estate, now in jeopardy?

Okay, if that's not enough to pique your interest, why don't we take a look at the real life estate that is featured in Downton Abbey:

Old House Syndrome

Yes, I have it as do many of you I'm sure. I grew up in an old home full of character and currently live in a home that is 103. Someday I hope to live in an even older home (sshh don't tell my husband). I have one picked out around the corner but more on this another day.

But today's post is not really about old houses...it's actually about a new home designed to emulate old French Provincial style with a bit of sophistication and modern flair (my favorite kind of style!) The house is in Buckhead, an exclusive Atlanta, Georgia neighborhood.

Mirror Makeover: Distressed Gray Patina

We've had these small gold mirrors for about a year, but I have never really loved how warm or coppery the gold frames were. So, I decided I would revamp them with a slightly metallic distressed gray patina process that I've used on others mirrors (and love the result).

French Skincare

It all started with a sample I received ten years ago. It was Caudalie's Pulpe Vitaminée Moisturizing Cream...the texture, the smell, the effects on my skin... the whole experience had me captivated.

Since then, sure I have strayed and cheated and tried other brands hoping for great results, but have found no other line that offers non-irritating formulas that deliver (even at a bit of a price).

Shortly before the holidays, I ran out of everything! Quelle horreur!! But my loving family came to the rescue and got me stocked up for a short while. First and foremost with my twice daily staple:

Epiphany

Today is the twelfth day after Christmas and a day to celebrate Epiphany, the arrival of the three kings with gifts for the newborn baby. To celebrate, why not celebrate the French way with a galette de rois (king cake)!

A Little History

"Traditionally, the galette des rois is made to celebrate Epiphany, which falls on the 6th of January, twelve days after Christmas. The cake is eaten in celebration of the arrival of the three kings who have traveled from afar with gifts for the newborn baby. In practice, people eat this galette throughout January and, dare I say, it is a rather unreligious event for most."

"A dried bean, known as la fève, or a small porcelain figurine (most common these days) is hidden in the cake, and whoever receives the bean or figurine in his or her piece of cake, is crowned king or queen for the duration of the party. Other popular traditions, include having the youngest member of the gathering sit under the table and designate to whom each piece of cake should be served."

Off to try the following recipe for galette de rois...but first I must make or purchase a gold paper crown and dig out a small porcelain figurine (I'm sure I have one from a box of Red Rose tea floating around...I know you tea drinkers know what I'm referring to, I bet you have a few of those little trinkets floating around too!)

Galette des rois
King Cake Recipe

Preparation time: 20 minutes
Baking time: 30 min

2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup ground almonds
2 eggs + 1 egg for painting
1 tablespoon rum (optional)
1 pound puff pastry (2 rounds)
1 large dry bean or fève figurine

To make the frangipane, blend the butter with the sugar until well combined. Blend in the almonds thoroughly. Beat in the 2 eggs one at a time and then the rum if you are using it.

In a small bowl, beat the remaining egg.

Roll out half of the puff pastry into a round about 12 inches in diameter. Place it on a wax paper lined baking sheet. Using a pastry brush, paint the outer 1 1/2 inch circumference of the pastry with beaten egg.

Spread the frangipane in a round in the center of the pastry so that it just meets the painted on egg. Press the bean into the frangipane somewhere close to the outer edge.

Place the other puff pastry (rolled out into an equally sized round) on top of the first. Use the times of a fork to press the edges closed. Brush the top of the galette with the beaten egg.

Use a paring knife to etch a pretty pattern into the top of the galette. Traditionally this is in a cross-hatch pattern, or concentric half circles, but you can make up your own pattern if you are feeling creative. Don't cut through the pastry, just etch.

Cut a small hole in the center of the pastry to allow steam to escape. Place the galette in the refrigerator to cool for at least 30 minutes before baking. You can make it a day in advance as well - just be sure to keep it refrigerated.

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Place the refrigerated galette in the center of the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the top is dark golden brown. Serve warm.

Makes 8 servings.

Earl Grey... such a delicious blend of bergamot and fine black tea...in fact, sipping a cup right now in my dainty new pink and black teacup gifted from my mother... imagine my excitement when I discovered this recipe for Earl Grey Pots de Creme from Martha Stewart Living... miam miam!

1 cup heavy cream
1 cup whole milk
2 tablespoons Earl Grey tea leaves
4 egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
1/8 teaspoon salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a small saucepan, bring the cream, milk, and tea leaves just to a boil over medium heat. Turn off heat; let steep at least 30 minutes but no more than 2 hours.
In a medium bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, lemon zest, and salt. Reheat infused cream over medium heat; slowly whisk into yolk mixture. Strain through a fine sieve into a bowl to extract as much liquid as possible without pressing on tea leaves. Discard leaves.
Working close to the oven to minimize risk of spilling water, arrange four 6-ounce ovenproof cups in a baking pan large enough to hold the cups without touching one another. Pour boiling water into pan, being careful not to splash any inside cups, until water comes halfway up sides of the cups.
Divide infused liquid among cups. Cover pan tightly with aluminum foil, poking a few holes to let steam escape. Bake until custards are set but still slightly wobbly in centers, about 30 minutes.
Carefully remove baking pan from oven; remove foil. Transfer cups from the hot water to a wire rack; let cool about 30 minutes. Cover cups with plastic wrap; chill in the refrigerator until custards are firm, at least 2 hours and up to 3 days. Serve with Honey Lace Cookies on the side.

Maybe you'll want this recipe from The Martini Diet...

I hope the entire recipe shows...if the bottom is cut off, basically you just put the mixture over the toasts, put them in the oven and flip after 5 minutes and bake until lightly browned. Arrange these with the rest of the cocktail treats.

Cafe Au Lait Pudding

Per Adrianna of A Cozy Kitchen:

If you like things on the sweeter side, I’d advise upping the sugar to 1/2 cup. If not, then stick with the 1/4 cup sugar.

2 cups whole milk
2 tablespoons instant coffee granules
1 teaspoon of Dutch processed cocoa powder
2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoon cornstarch
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoon sugar, divided
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, divided
Cinnamon for sprinkling

Do a little prep action by making your ice bath first. Grab two metal or glass bowls, one slightly smaller than the other. Fill the larger bowl with ice and a bit of water and place the smaller bowl inside it.

Whisk together milk, coffee granules, cocoa powder, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, cornstarch, 1/4 cup sugar (or 1/2 cup of sugar–your choice), and a small pinch of salt in a heavy medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally, then boil 1 minute, whisking constantly.

Adrianna Note: Be sure to scrape the corners of the pot with your whisk to ensure all the cornstarch is properly combined.

Transfer the pudding to the smaller bowl in your ice bath so it can cool, stirring often, about 10 minutes. If there are lumps in the pudding, simply run it through a sieve or strainer. Then pour the pudding into cups or ramekins and chill for 20 minutes. Since I really despise any skin on my pudding, I placed a piece of Saran wrap on the surface to stop that from happening. If you’re a freak and love it, then by all means keep it uncovered.

While the pudding is chilling, beat cream with 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla and remaining 2 tablespoon sugar using an electric mixer just until soft peaks form. Spoon whipped cream onto puddings and dust cream lightly with cinnamon.

If you keep the pudding in the fridge overnight or even for a few hours, I’d take it out of the fridge 15 minutes before serving. I found the consistency was the best when it wasn’t super cold. Enjoy!

Wavering on Wallpaper

Our smallest guest room is fairly bare bones right now with white paint, white floors, a shaggy white area rug, and a black iron bed. While I'm loving the bright look of it, it needs a more pulled together look and a bit of visual interest. I'm considering wallpaper, although many naysayers have warned against it. However, it seems that wallpaper application and removal has never been easier than with the self-adhesive variety that is so popular today. Well, it's November 1st, hard to believe! I did a little research on La Toussaint and have posted a beautiful oil on canvas painting by French artist Émile Friant (1863-1932).

All Saints Day is one of the most respected national public days in France. During this bank holiday, French people traditionally pay tribute to their relatives but La Toussaint (French All Saints) is also a good opportunity to get together and spend time in family.

On November 1st it is a common sight to see French people laying chrysanthemums or wreaths of immortelles (everlasting flowers) on the graves of loved ones.
Chrysanthemums are indeed so closely linked to La Toussaint that the French never give them as a gift.

Vintage Halloween Decor

While searching for fun halloween recipes, I came across the idea of a vintage inspired halloween a la Tim Burton (you know, creator of The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands (a personal favorite), and many more movies). This is a great idea to get away from the traditional black and orange and to create a more ethereal slightly spooky look like many of Burton's films. The idea came from this website, but it didn't offer much in the way of ideas, so I included a few of their pictures and searched other ideas out my own...

Paper flower

I love fresh flowers in the house, but it's not always practical to refresh them on a regular basis. Having made plenty of fabric flowers, I thought I would try my hand at paper flowers. Although I plan to make a bouquet of them (using colored tissue paper), I started with one to see how it would go. Here's what I came up with:

My supplies: old packaging paper, scissors, orange and black ribbon, and wooden skewers

Next, with the paper folded, cut a half heart to create one set of petals

Continue cutting different size half hearts (petals)

Begin twisting at the base as you add the petals

Soon, the flower will begin to take shape

Add a bit of tape around the base and tie on your ribbon

Et voila!

My apologies for such terrible lighting in these photos, but I hope this 'tutorial' was easy to follow and you'll give paper flowers a try too!

Our living room was in need of some pizzaz. We chose the neutral decor because we tend to get bored with our surroundings easily and this way, we could add color, texture, or pattern through different pillows and other accent pieces. This morning I decided to do a little sewing and created modern new pillow covers to add some excitement to the room!

While looking through my closet to see if I own any items on trend for fall 2011, I found a few pieces that might just work with the addition of some vibrant trendy pieces.

Fall 2011 key pieces that I already own (pictured below): Lace (on this black BCBG dress), black and white menswear (white collar shirt with black ribbon necklace), cobalt blue necklace, graphic striped sweater, sequin pumps, fur (faux) capelet coat, and vintage jewel earrings. Looking dull so far...

Time to add some color to this mix! The trends I am coveting most are a mustard colored dress, red lipstick, & red pants:

Their mission is basically to work with community agencies who have secured housing for families struggling with homelessness and poverty and design inspiring interiors to positively impact families and encourage parents to maintain a standard of living to be proud of. Part II: Nighstand Patina After Photos

A productive day to say the least. I finally painted the nightstands I pictured in this post, cleaned the house, and made a new necklace! The nightstands are a major improvement, but they're missing that je ne sais quoi and I think a little metallic Rub 'n Buff cream on the details will do just the trick. But for now, this is how they look:

Not too bad, huh? If only I could have taken the pictures during daylight they wouldn't be so fuzzy! Sorry. And just for fun, here's the necklace...

Little things that make a difference: bedroom decor refresher

Our bedroom is the least finished room in our house. Although our bedroom is not the beauty we hope to have someday, it is a major improvement from what existed when we moved in! We recently added a diy headboard (courtesy of my dad- more on this project later), a bedskirt, a painting (courtesy of my mom), and a new-to-us antique chair which in total have made the room more pulled together and cozy. The new look cannot be appreciated without seeing the humble beginnings of our bedroom...

Viceroy Palm Springs: destination inspired vignette

My husband and I talk about visitng the Viceroy Palm Springs in California hopefully sooner than later. Maybe some of you have been there, maybe not. Given the state of the economy, for us and many others, vacations are the last thing on our minds. But this has gotten me to think about how to bring these destinations to us since we cannot get to them. Luckily, creating a Viceroy Palm Springs vignette in a small area of our home was fairly simple given that our decor is primarily black and white. Out for a walk with my dog this morning, I picked a wildflower that became the yellow featured in the vignette. Before I show you my simple little creation, allow me to take you on a quick virtual vacation to this stylish hotel:

Gatsby Inspiration

I love The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was one of the few books that I actually read in its entirety in high school (or at least didn't ask my dad to help me finish reading so I could work on other homework like most other assigned literature). Recently I learned that a new rendition of the movie is being released in 2012, starring none other than...you guessed it...Leo. DiCaprio, that is. He always seems to play a convincing 'time period' character and I'm sure he won't disappoint. Mostly, I'm looking forward to the costuming and the movie set, hoping it encompasses some of these beautiful ideas:

Dining Room Revamp

When we bought our house in 2008 (from owners who had not updated it in 40 years), we knew it would need many hours of care. The dining room was one of the easiest to revamp but one of the most important since it is the first room to be seen once you cross the threshold of our front door and mudroom.

Before:
